Remembering Missy

Yesterday our beloved calico-kitty, Missy, passed away. She was almost 17 years old and ill, but she held on until our daughter could make the 4 hour drive home and be with her. She was an extraordinary kitty who brought so much beauty and love into our lives.

She will be missed more than words can express.

  1. Hi Cindy -

My heart goes out to you and your family for your loss of Missy. You chose a lovely photo of her for your memorial post! It is never easy when our beloved pets have to leave us ... and it is my deepest belief that they choose the when, when possible ... in Missy's case, she waited until your daughter could be there so you had one another to lean on. Hugs of strength and healing, as Missy runs free at the Rainbow Bridge ... Peggy (and Indie & Bennett)

  2. Thank you, Peggy. Your kind words mean a lot to me. My daughter actually picked out Missy from a friend's litter when they were both little and they kind of grew up together. Megan felt like Missy's Mom (making me the Grandma, lol)...so after all these years she really wanted to be with Missy at the end. We're lucky it worked out that way because it gave Megan closure, and in the end Missy passed away peacefully with Megan by her side.

I think about Missy so much and miss her tremendously. When I enter a room I see her out of the corner of my eye for a second before I realize she's not there; and my brain thinks it hears her distant meowing throughout the day, but of course, it's not really her - just my mind playing tricks, and that brings tears to my eyes. So I'm definitely grieving; and I know time will heal the hurt, but for now the hugs really, really help. Thank you.

  4. Yes, Peggy, and if it is possible for you to link the picture back to my "Remembering Missy" post, I'd appreciate if very much because you (and others) have created beautiful, touching cards to honor your pets--but so far all I have is my blog post. I've actually been inspired (sadly, by her passing) to create a card mourning the loss of our beloved pets.

By the way, I took that photo of Missy approximately 6-8 years ago, when she was in the prime of her life. :-) I have so many incredibly lovely memories of her...but whenever I think about them it just makes me miss her more.

  6. Oh Peggy! That is such a beautiful post! I feel honored and touched that you included Missy. :) Plus, even though I know people lose pets all the time (sad, but true), the fact that you personalized those other two (as well as your own loss) makes me feel a little easier about it because I see that I'm truly not alone. Also, it's nice to know there's an online support group if I feel I need it. I've been throwing myself into making cards today, so that's really helped, too.

It's inspiring to read about your experience with becoming a foster pet parent, Peggy. I just learned through a friend that she knows someone who will have to put down her little 2 year old doggie (Lola) if she can't find a home for it before she moves in August. I'm going to offer to adopt Lola, but I still feel like I need a few weeks to mourn; so luckily it doesn't have to be this week.

Thanks for being there for me, Peggy. And your beautiful post came at the perfect time. :)

(P.S. I'll go check my pm now)

  7. I'm so sorry to hear about your loss. Pets fill our lives and hearts with love, which makes it hard when it is time for them to go. It sounds like you have many wonderful memories of your Missy to treasure.

  8. Thank you for posting, Shelley. We've had many pets over the years, but only Missy and one other cat (Snuffy--that we had just before we got Missy) left me with such a broken heart when they passed away. The pain is beginning to ease a little, and I don't cry as much when I remember her. But it's still going to take some time.

    Thank you again.

  9. Missy has sent Lola to you ... I can't wait to hear more about her! Thank you for your kind words - the fact that you took time during your mourning to reach out speaks volumes about you (in my book). I hope that time has helped dull the rawness - the memories will stay strong in your heart and bring comfort!
